THE A&W LOGO EXPLAINED
The Andrews & Wilson logo was designed to represent our writing partnership, joint military service, and the two Navy communities we served. The twin crossed blades are graphical depictions of Naval Officer swords as both Jeff and Brian were commissioned officers. In old times, this iconic blade was presented to naval officers upon commissioning and worn on the high seas.
The "bonefrog" has multiple metaphorical meanings tied to Naval Special Warfare—the community where Jeff served as a combat surgeon and deployed with an East Coast based SEAL team. The frog represents "frogmen," a popular nickname for SEALs. The skeletal remains of the frog honors the fallen, SEALs who gave their lives in the call of duty.
The kraken lurking at the bottom of the logo looking up represents Brian's silent service in the submarine community. In the Navy, submariners are often referred to as "squids," a satirical nickname that is embraced with pride. Like the kraken, the submariner targets unsuspecting vessels on the surface, blind and deaf to the danger below.
The A&W letters should be self-explanatory. No...not the root beer, but rather Andrews & Wilson.
